The study finds deltas around the world are sinking at similar rates to or even faster than sea levels are rising, and that it's mostly due to human activity, such as extracting groundwater and Libyan dam construction.
Leonard Ohaha, the study's lead author, says that's the case for the Mississippi River Delta.
He hopes this research will help people living in deltas figure out how best to deal with land loss, like, for example, using river sediment to build back land.
