But there's sixes.
Look almost exactly.
Like our sevens.
And not only that, but they have that same curved top line to them, just like Joe 7 seemed to have on his burned notebook.
Now I'm willing to bet the sevens on the bartender's napkin looked the exact same way, but regardless, it made me realize something.
Joe wasn't writing 777.
He was using the Arabic numbers.
What he was really writing was 666.
This obviously added a whole new dimension to the case, as it was now entirely possible that Joe was actually suffering some kind of religious mania.
Now it also lined up with his intimidating encounter with Pastor Ed down in Los Animos, because if he was angry at the church in some tangible or more abstract sense, it stood to reason that he might get drunk and consider assaulting a pastor.
But why?
What the hell had gone so wrong in his life that he felt the need to do something so awful?
Now a lot of the time it's a psychological issue and there ain't no rhyme or reason to it whatsoever.
But from where I was standing at the time, there might not have been any obvious reason, but the whole thing had this dark rhyme to it, like I was slowly but surely uncovering something much darker than I'd first anticipated.
Like I said, the investigation had just about ground to a halt by the time I came to the seven seventy seven revelation.
I tried courthouses, DMVs, the National White Pages.
I even tried one of those old fashioned crisscross directories which allow me to get in touch with Joe's old neighbors down in Los Animos.
But no one had seen or heard of him.
He didn't need to leave the US to go off the grid, but it still felt like there was a chance that he'd left the country entirely.
Those religious fixations sometimes end up in Rome or Israel or even further afield.
