so I believed them when they said that they waited for the full 30 before approaching their kill.
And then after standing over it for a minute or so and making damn sure that the thing wasn't breathing anymore, they started fixing to take some pictures.
But then no sooner had one of the hunters kneeled down behind it, the buck that they were quite certain was dead suddenly leapt to its feet and gored the man closest to it really, really bad.
He suffered three very serious puncture wounds to his stomach and chest, and since it was all close quarters chaos, his buddy didn't have the time or the accuracy to shoulder his rifle and try to put the buck down again.
Luckily, the thing took off just as fast once it gored the guy to the ground, so he didn't receive any additional injuries.
But unfortunately, his buddy's shot missed.
Now, I never rejoice when an animal is killed.
It was frustrating not getting our hands on its body so we could further analyze it and potentially figure out how it appeared to come back to life all aggressive like that.
A lot of figuring out what's going on with flora or fauna ends up in a lab, so no samples meant no answers.
But the most important thing was that our wounded hunter was airlifted to a hospital where the doctors managed to save his life.
Now, some said it was nothing short of a miracle considering the damage that buck's antlers had done.
But if you notice, folks never seem to question the miracles.
It's always the mysteries that keep them up at night.
And the mystery in this case was how in the world that buck had jumped to its feet after two experienced hunters were so sure that it was dead.
Now, after we talked with the wounded hunter and his partner, I was one of the wildlife officers dispatched to the scene.
It was eerie as all heck out there, just knowing that we were in a place where something like that had happened.
But since the buck in question was already shot, we figured it'd only be a matter of time before we found it laid out somewhere, dead as a doornail.
But we searched for hours, up and down in every direction, and we didn't find so much as a pile of poop.
And that didn't make a lick of sense.
Now, our wounded hunter said that his aim was good, and he put a bullet through both that buck's lungs.
