I still wasn't sure which garden was on fire.
My friends live at the penultimate house in the terrace and I was worried it was their garden.
I ran outside and was surprised to discover I was alone.
The first thing I did was run to the end of the street and that's when I realized that it was the side garden of the final house in the row, number 20, which was on fire.
And from what I could tell, it was the garden shed but the flames were licking dangerously towards the house itself which was pretty dilapidated and in particular had a wooden balcony which could easily catch fire.
I ran straight to number 19 and knocked, waking them up and started yelling that the next door was on fire and it could spread to their house and they needed to get out of there right away.
Now as soon as I left number 19 with the family in tow, I was met by other neighbors who had also heard the commotion.
A few of us had already called the fire brigade at the same time and we were assured that they were on their way.
I looked around and I could not see the guy who lived in number 20.
I assumed that he would have been first to evacuate but no.
Entering his garden was impossible as he had a big wooden gate which was locked and would have been too slow to climb over.
So in my infinite wisdom, I decided to head down the footpath that headed into town and try and yell for the guy who lived there, and also his cat, who I was very fond of.
I took a few steps down from the footpath when suddenly there was another explosion from the shed.
A huge, billowing wall of flame rolled over the wall and came thundering towards me, and the fire got so close to me that it singed my eyebrows and the hairs on my arms.
I jumped backwards.
If I had taken one single step forwards, I would have been hit by that wall of flame.
Now I'm certain that someone was looking out for me that day because I was so close to being immolated that damn, it's honestly scary to even think about to this day.
Now the first brigade showed up and then the cops.
And when the fire was put out and all the commotion had died down and some time had passed, we eventually discovered through our neighborhood watch liaison that it had been an act of arson.
Someone had set the neighbor's shed on fire.
