Knowing the situation was akin to a ticking time bomb here, with a derelict high-rise being much closer than the surrounding hills, our sergeant asked our troop commander if we should set up a listening post in an adjacent flat.
A car full of lads could sneak up there before dawn, take a concealed position up, and then when the snipers fired, boom, they'd pounce.
When the boss okayed it, we were chuffed to the bits.
We'd been sitting on our arses getting shot at for weeks,
and with F all to show for it.
So, as you can imagine, we were well up for getting our own back.
Now, the next morning, the wagons arrived at the checkpoint, but only mine was occupied.
The other only had its driver because the lads who normally occupied it had their listening posts set up in the high rise.
We waited, and we waited, checking in with each other every so often, then around 11 that morning, a radio man up in the listening post started tapping on his receiver.
and none of us needed to figure out the code that he was tapping out to know someone was in the building with them.
We were all on tenterhooks, waiting for something to happen, and when it did, we were relieved to hear none of our blokes were hurt after the shooting stopped.
Our lads up in the high rise had taken down two-thirds of a three-man sniper team, most likely belonging to a Serb militia by the looks of them.
The third, who was unarmed, dropped to his knees and begged for his life.
And seeing as a prisoner would be handy, the lads brought him back to the checkpoint with his arms tied behind his back.
But before that, we heard something over the radios that had us right shocked.
So, after our lads killed two-thirds of the sniper team, then took the third bloke prisoner, they searched the bodies of the two dead men to see what they had on them.
They had a bit of money on them, cigarettes, lighters, bits and pieces like that.
But then in the pocket of one dead man, our section mates found a passport.
An Italian passport.
They obviously compared the picture to the dead man's face just to make sure it was really him.
