I press the salt out of the water, and so I can wash.

But everything you do is an economy of effort.

If you go up to the front cabin, that's a movement that you don't necessarily need to make if you don't need it.

Everything needs to be considered to economize on effort.

Because if you're going to do 9 to 12 hours of exercise a day, that's going to take everything you've got.

And you want to keep your mental capacity enough that you can make good decisions and navigate and stay alive.

Lose the mental clarity?

Well, I'm a trained captain, so I'm pretty sharp on that.

But coming down the coast in June, I rode past Point Conception and had one of the most harrowing nights of my life at sea.

And that night, even though my experience told me what I needed to do and I did those things and I didn't ever feel that I was risking my life, but I also knew from experience that I was in a very dangerous situation.

That if I didn't do this thing that my experience was telling me to do, I need...

Dire things could happen.

Ultimately, waves were breaking clean over my boat.

And if that wasn't bad enough, I had rowed all day and now I was awake all night.

So what happened was the Santa Ana's turned on like this freak 40 mile an hour blast of 100 degree heat just off the land like that.

And it mashed.

It created wind waves that mashed into the prevailing current.

And just this, you know, nightmare began.

Which is even more dangerous because... And in front of the shipping lane, there's now stuff that can hit you and you can hit it and...

But I went through into the different modes of severe sleep deprivation.
