This might embarrass you a little, but I was deeply grateful for the moments when you did say that it was hard.
Because I think that there is, certainly in this profession, I think that whether it's true or not, I think that we all have this idea that we need to be stronger than the material in order to keep doing the work.
And I'm not crying, by the way.
I just am phlegmy.

And...
During COVID, I made KUOW bring trainers in to talk about complex secondary trauma, which is a thing journalists can experience from telling hard story after hard story after hard story.
I basically did it because that was something I was experiencing, and I was like, I need to talk about this.
And we're not.
Why?
And I realized through this that...
There is a deeply humane way to do work that is hard and tell stories that are difficult.
And that's just where my brain and that's where I'm headed from now on professionally is there is a humane way that will not destroy your mental health.
So that was like our mission for this.
And that's like my personal mission for my profession from here on out for the rest of my career.
