Libby Eyre

Freckle is an oscillated eagle ray.

She's one of a group that's currently housed in captivity at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

Libby Eyre is a biologist who lives in Sydney and she used to look after Freckle the ray.

Freckle is also a rather nervous ray.

She's a bit of a manipulative ray.

She liked to get her way a lot.

Very smart, like all the rays, but also if she didn't want to participate in a training session, she wouldn't come over to a training session.

I love her already.

Things started to change in early 2018 and we noticed that Freckle had developed...

a bit of a belly no shame in that we started taking a series of photos in you know the same spot as she was swimming past each day just to see how that belly was changing and there was this sudden dawning of oh actually maybe she's pregnant

There is this thing called parthenogenesis, and it had been recorded in oscillated eagle rays very rarely, and it was overseas.

It was the 26th of July, and noticed that Freckle no longer had a belly.

And I was frantically running around the tunnel looking and I just saw this little floppy spotted piece of ravioli swimming around the tank.
