So about five to 10 meters to the left of us.

And we sort of didn't quite realise what was happening at the time until they were all in the middle in this big crowd.

And then when the police came out, the first time we'd ever seen riot police and the police all came jogging out in line with all their batons and shields and helmets.

And this was just, whoa.

And there was a huge roar from the crowd when they came out because we thought, hey, police will just brush away these protesters and we'll get on with the game.

But the longer it went on as the police just formed this big circle around them and didn't really seem that inclined to sort of brush them off and were dragging them away individually one by one.

And a couple of times it got a little bit scary when we sort of thought they were throwing tear gas, but I think it was just smoke.

The protesters were throwing smoke bombs and you get this nasty smelling stuff blowing over you and going, oh, what's that?

And

Yeah, it was all a very new experience, certainly something we'd never seen in New Zealand, you know, smoke and gas and helmeted and shielded, battened police.

This was just outrageous.

But there was this optimism in the crowd that it was all going to get sorted and the game would go on.

So when they finally announced that the game was cancelled, they didn't tell us at the time that somebody was –

threatening to dive a plane into the grandstand, which is why they eventually cancelled it.

They didn't say that in order to create a panic or anything, and we couldn't believe it.

You know, this was just outrageous, a game.

And so that's when the crowd got really angry and people started to charge into the protesters and...

and give them a good kicking.

Up until that point, yeah, nobody had been too terribly fussed about the protesters.

But when they'd stopped our game, that changed the atmosphere completely.
