In 1887, to encourage Indian assimilation into white society through farming and land ownership, Congress began carving up Indian territory by passing the Dawes Severalty Act.
This act divided communal tribal land into individual 160-acre plots.
While the act was intended to deed land to citizens of Indian Territory, surplus plots were open to non-natives.
So in 1889, the first white and black settlers were allowed onto the western part of Indian Territory, sparking a land rush.
Tens of thousands of people raced to claim plots, and new towns sprang up virtually overnight.
As this influx of white and black settlers flooded the region, Indian territory began to lose its status as a refuge for displaced Indians and former slaves.
And soon, Bass Reeves confronted the dawning of a new era of chaos, crime, and racial conflict.
