And maybe that was just because of the stability of the decades-long relationship rather than age itself?
Correct.
So, you know, all of the research showing that older adults are better at minimizing conflicts and tensions in their relationship, all of that was based on couples who are in longstanding marriages.
So a lot of times what these studies are doing are they're comparing older couples who often have been married 50 years to younger couples who have been maybe married five years.
And so when you're making that kind of comparison, it's really hard to know
are the advantages you're seeing in the older couples because of the wisdom that comes with age or the wisdom that comes with being with the same person for 50 years.
So that's why we wanted to look at these dating couples, to untangle those two effects, to really look at age independent of how long they've been in the relationship.
Let's get to the fun stuff.
Dating over 50, dating in your golden years has exploded in recent times with apps and whatnot.
For people entering the dating scene at that age, what recommendations might you have?
Would it just be an awareness of this that it might increase stress in your life?
Or are there tips and tricks to sort of date better as we age?
That's a great question.
I would start by saying relationships are core to our mental and physical health overall.
We are social beings.
We thrive when we are in healthy and happy relationships.
I would not shy away from relationships just because of these findings.
All these findings suggest is that the early stages of the relationship are normatively difficult and challenging for everybody.
Yes, it can take a somewhat bigger emotional and physical toll on older adults, but I certainly wouldn't say shy away from relationships.
And something we haven't investigated that we are hoping to look at more in the future is maybe there is an adaptive advantage to these stronger reactions that older adults are having.
