I would start by saying relationships are core to our mental and physical health overall.
We are social beings.
We thrive when we are in healthy and happy relationships.
I would not shy away from relationships just because of these findings.
All these findings suggest is that the early stages of the relationship are normatively difficult and challenging for everybody.
Yes, it can take a somewhat bigger emotional and physical toll on older adults, but I certainly wouldn't say shy away from relationships.
And something we haven't investigated that we are hoping to look at more in the future is maybe there is an adaptive advantage to these stronger reactions that older adults are having.
Because another thing we see is that as we get older,
we tend to call our social networks and we basically keep the good relationships and get rid of the bad relationships.
And so these stronger reactions to tensions may actually prove adaptive and signal that maybe this is a relationship that we shouldn't stay in.
