And so William and Evelyn reunite eventually in London.
and they marry 10 days later in Southampton, the most beautiful church I think I've ever been in.
And, you know, it was quite something in researching the book, you know, walking down that aisle that just, this was everything Evelyn hoped for was to be reunited with her William.
He wrote to J Bruce Ismay because Evelyn told him the story of J Bruce Ismay, who at the time was one of the most reviled people in the world.
He had to front up to the US inquiry and then again to the UK inquiry.
And he was asked, how is it?
that you managed to get a spot in the lifeboat.
Captain Smith, of course, went down with the ship, as is the great tradition, but J. Bruce Ismay survived.
And he was deeply offended at the question.
at the impertinence of the question asked at the inquiry.
And he said, how dare you?
Do you think I am the sort of man who would take a spot on a lifeboat when women and children are still waiting for their own spots?
Well, he meant it as a rhetorical question, but the truth is, yes, he was, because of the 434 women who were on that ship, 130 of them perished, and almost half the children perished as well.
But J. Bruce Ismay got out of there alive.
But for William, J. Bruce Ismay was the man who
who managed to save Evelyn's life by ordering her into that lifeboat.
And so he wrote to him to thank him.
