And the sound of the engines,

was more cushioned than any other ship those in third class had ever been on before.

So for everyone, the journey was an elevated experience.

Well, that became a bit of a problem because...

Jay Bruce Ismay, you know, we knew that he wanted glamour.

That market had been cornered.

He knew that this was the most celebrated and known to be the most luxurious journey that you could take to America.

So he was pretty satisfied with that.

And between Captain Smith and Jay Bruce Ismay...

they were getting pretty excited about the fact that they were making extraordinarily good time.

And so they started posting each day's journey and the speed at which they were travelling and the distance that they had achieved each day on the notice board.

And amongst particularly those in first class, they started laying bets about

about exactly how quickly they were going to get to New York.

So it had become a bit of a sport on board.

So even the passengers were getting very excited about the speed of this journey.

So J. Bruce Ismay really had his sights set on not only luxury but speed, which would mean he could leave Cunard behind and win that war.

They were all thrilled to be communicating with the Titanic because its fame was so extraordinary in the past.

So all of these cablegrams would always start off with a very cheery message, you know, thrilled that they were communicating with the Titanic.

But there was an extraordinary ice field that was further south than anyone had ever seen before.
