We came to Jordan on sabbatical with my family so that the kids whose father is Jordanian could have a chance to get in touch with their culture, learn some Arabic.

I came on sabbatical to Sesame, which is the synchrotron in Jordan.

And since then, I've been doing some consulting for them, which has been really great.

It's a multinational facility with the idea of science for peace.

And so that's been an amazing experience.

Yes, that's exactly right.

We often see in textbooks a picture of like a bag of water with a few organelles like the nucleus here and there.

But in fact, the cell is so full of molecules, they can't even move.

There's so many of them.

So there's small molecules, small chemicals, or there's big molecules like DNA and protein.

And so that's a real challenge if we want to see inside the cell.

And so the molecules we make, the sensors, will just light up with colour and

specific parts of the cell that we're interested in and so that lets us get a much clearer picture so that we can look through this really complex space and see just what we want to see.

Normally not so the idea is they'll only become fluorescent when they find the specific environment they want to find or they find the specific say drug molecule that they want to see.

That's right.

We can understand the chemistry of the cells.

So the chemistry that causes disease or the chemistry that we use to treat disease or just the chemistry that makes cells run.

That's right, yes.

We're very interested in reactive oxygen species, so those molecules that cause harm in our cells that are involved in ageing.

I mean, it is, and this is the challenge of medical research.
