If you hadn't read in the news, the Trump administration slashed the monument protections for Bears Ears.
This was originally designated in 2016 under President Obama.
And it's about 1.4 million acre monument under the Antiquities Act, ostensibly to stop rampant looting across 100,000 plus acre or 100,000 native archaeological sites.
It was backed by a five tribe coalition, et cetera, et cetera.
Trump won, slashed the monument in 2017.
Biden then fully restored in 2021.
Just a few weeks ago, July 13th, 2026, Trump to slash it again down to about 120,000 acres.
Yes, by executive order.
And it's because of an interpretation.
He feels that or his administration, him, whatever, feels that.
he can reduce those based on a clause that says the minimum, it's like the minimum amount or the least amount of space necessary.
The opponents to this say that you can create monuments, you can't undo monuments.

so basically yeah it's sorry the the clause is smallest area compatible um and it his rationale is it locked up critical mineral resources uh from a hunting perspective it doesn't really change the hunting management that's still in the hands of utah but it does change the access because travel rules in a monument it restricts you to motorize travel strictly on designated roads protect cultural ruins and whatnot without the monument protections you can basically do whatever you can do on blm land which is a lot um
Then there's also an opening of a 60-day window for potential mining, oil, and gas leasing, which will most likely happen in that area.
I wouldn't say the opposite, but an interesting effect of this is that when this whole political kerfuffle went down in 2016 with Obama and then back and forth, pre-2016 visitation was 75,000 people annually with national headlines and all the digital apps and stuff.
It drove visitation to 400,000 visitors last year.
