I think we could do a lot better.
Again, one of my frustrations of the decade since Brexit, it was obvious that leaving would cause a big economic hit the way it has.
Two places that massively outperformed our forecasts, not just what happened, is India and China.
Every other region of the world, including the United States, actually underperformed what we suggested was going to happen over the past 25 years.
And that is the reality of what's going on in the world economy.
We have to somehow acknowledge that these countries think they need a bigger voice in global governance.
It's a very good question and an extremely important one.
There are many factors that have accumulated in the past few years that have concerned me.
And I'll give you a specific example.
But at the core of it is effectively what you said without mentioning the phrase G20.
One of the very, very few...
positive things that's come out of global policy development this millennium to date, forced by the great financial crisis, was the role of the G20.
And that was done by President George Bush.
It actually existed technically as an organization already, but he brought it to life because it included the BRICS.
And to his credit, and those that followed immediately, including Obama and, of course, George Gordon Brown here in the UK.
they realise you can't solve genuine global issues unless you have these big rising powers with an important seat at the table.
And the specific example that followed that, towards the middle and back end of COVID, I was asked by Mario Monti to be a commissioner on something that became known as the Monti Commission, which was a WHO Europe thing to try and make sure the fallouts of future infections
wouldn't be anything like uh the catastrophe that that was and one of the ideas mario and i dreamt up was something we called a global finance and health board which was copying the global stability board that came out of financial stability board that came out of the uh 08 financial crisis which has been specifically actually quite a big success in terms of global financial stability
And that idea was adopted by the Italian presidency of the G20 that year.
And just as importantly, the G7, effectively, although some were more eager than others, embraced it as one of the, and it was going to be one of the three initiatives of the Italian presidency.
