This is the Global News Podcast from the BBC World Service.
This reminds us that we are two old nations who have come together to share a history together that binds us together.
And it's a more iconic object in the UK than it is in France.
Because for us, it's the foundation story of our modern history.
The Normans arrived, they changed our language, our food, our architecture, our sovereign.
In France, it wasn't the same impact at all.
So I think Emmanuel Macron understood that by lending it to the UK, it would be very, very powerful here.
Thousands and thousands of children would learn, which they probably don't now, about the history of that period.
And therefore, it's a way of expanding the relationship beyond the ups and downs of the day-to-day.

You couldn't attack a European force if you were Russia without serious consequences, that the Americans would be there to support their European allies in some form. But I think it's a very long way from any clarity as to what President Trump might be willing to do, and I suspect not very much.
