Um well you know, writers always talk about you have to write every day and you have to read every day and they're not doctors.

So that's my response

Uh, you know, sometimes you can't.

Like in pandemic, I wrote a few articles early on and then when I started working for the city and state, I just stopped.

And partly it was the horrible, horrible, horrible things we were seeing and that the government was doing to other people.

And and part of it was just not having time because I was doing my UCSF job and that job.

So so sometimes I don't write.

And I actually stopped reading then too, which also happened to me in residency, like when I did the cancer award the first, you know, just sometimes things are so horrific it shuts me down and I can't bear any more pain, fictional or otherwise.

Um, but but when things are, you know, not in international crisis uh situations, then um

Then I'll often go in spurts.

I mean, if it's ideal, I will do it first thing in the morning, but if I'm really busy at work, it it tugs at me and then I just I have this like anxiety and I have to do my job.

But but you know, we have weeks that are better and weeks that are harder.

And if I'm disciplined or you know, you get a lucky clinic where you can write your notes, not you know, it's not gonna take you the rest of the week to get through them and make all the phone calls and all the arrangements and stuff like that.

Um, that helps.

And then I'll usually have a run of things.

Um, I also tend to acquire information because my process is so different from Roseanne's.

I can write little pieces of things that then when I get time, um, and this

Generally I will have blocks where I'll take a vacation or I'll go to there these artists or writers' colonies, um, or you could do fellowships to do this.
