But really, and that's important about the industrial school, because so many of the women who ended up in the Magdalene Laundry were girls.
They weren't, as I say, they weren't women who were pregnant outside of marriage, but they were often the daughters of those babies born outside of marriage who'd grown up in industrial schools.
Anyway, this one woman was off living her life.
I don't think doing anything as a 17, 18 year old that I wouldn't have done.
And then the nuns one day had packed her suitcase and said, you know, we're sending you somewhere else.
And she said she spent years looking back, wondering what she had done wrong.
And she said, all I can think that I did wrong was I just loved life.
I loved enjoying myself.
So there was never anything so discreet, so explicit.
And I think that's also really torturous.
Like, why am I here?
I did nothing wrong.
Yeah, working Monday to Saturday from, I mean, it was a bracing start in the morning.
They were up at six, straight into their, back into their uniform, shimmying, again, they're often in dormitory, so they're shimmying out of the nighties into their uniforms, down on the knees to begin with their prayers, then down to mass every morning, straight to work.
So, you know, one of the sentences that kept coming up was work, work, work, pray, pray, pray.
And that really was the ticking beat of their day.
And it's interesting to say about the lace makers, like the photos I included, so that's from a newspaper at the time of this woman holding up this christening robe and it was going to be gifted to John F. Kennedy.
And I wanted to include some of those pictures because...
Initially, when the scandal of the Magdalene laundries broke, and particularly after Peter Mullen's film, The Magdalene Sisters came out, there was a bit of a, well, if only we'd known.
If only we'd known, as if the laundries had somehow been so hidden, so underground.
