I think it was in the 1960s.
And then she was given the freedom of the city somewhere in the last 10 years.
So, you know, there's a gap there between, you know, like what happened and now our ability to speak about it.
There was like a silent window for a period.
But no, there were people like that.
I really thought I would get to speak to nuns and I wrote letters to all the different orders.
Those letters to the orders are like some of my best ever writing.
And I sort of said, you know, I had said to them, as I sort of say in the conclusion of the book, my mother had grown up in the gardener's cottage of a closed order of convent of Carmelites.
right beside High Park.
And so I said, listen, you know, I've grown up with nuns and I'm really willing to see it your way.
And only one order responded.
And we had we had an exchange, but it wasn't, you know, an on the record interview or anything like that.
So I thought, how am I going to get the nuns perspective?
But there are a small handful of nuns like Patricia Brooke Brogan, Phyllis McMahon, Margaret Rine.
who basically the effect of seeing these institutions was such that they abandoned their vocation entirely because they could see the inevitable course of their life was that if they stayed working in these places, they would be absorbed by them.
You know, it's not that I think the nuns are evil.
I don't think they were monsters.
But when the system is such designed that you are, as Patricia Burke-Bogan wrote, a jailer,
And you can't escape.
You don't go home for tea.
