Lots of the other girls are from Wexford.

You know, that feeling of familiarity.

You're from Wexford.

I'm from Wexford.

And immediately she realises she can't say where she's from and where she's been and why she doesn't have a Wexford accent.

And, you know, she said, oh, I sent away to boarding school.

And lots of the women will have come up with stories on the huff like that.

But they said, why were you sent away to boarding school?

And she said, because my father died at sea.

And I just always loved that.

It was a really dramatic flourish, as if I have to lie about my past.

But I just thought that was like a little act of resistance.

I'm not just going to go disappear into the night and pretend I'm nobody and nothing.

But that's what happens.

And then so many of the women, you know, then you meet partners.

Yeah.

Boyfriends, you make friends, you get married, you have children.

At what point do you begin to reveal this thing that you've never spoken about and you have no language to talk about?

Because also when some women were bolder and they did say to people around them, well, I'll have you know about the nuns and I'll tell you actually the reality of St.

Mary's Magdalene Asylum.
