And in fact, if a woman was found to be pregnant, she would have been moved straight to the mother and baby home.
So what I realised was, you know, the mother and baby homes were for women who were pregnant outside of marriage.
Magdalene laundries were something else entirely.
And I began to use everything I thought I knew about the Magdalene laundries.
Not that it was wrong.
I actually, everything I thought I had just slipped through my fingers.
And so that was, I went back to the beginning.
Who were these women and why were they sent there?
And in the process of this, small things like these was, the film came out.
I went to see it in an afternoon.
It was a packed cinema in Edinburgh.
You know, beautiful film, beautifully shot, really thoughtful, really meditative.
And then at the end, this credit comes up saying this film is dedicated to the 56,000 women who were sent to Magdalene Laundries, women and girls, I think I might have said young women, and the babies who were taken from them.
And, you know, in the cinema, I just heard the soft cacophony of like tuts and gasps, like how, like, you know, here's the stark smack of factual reality.
This was the wrong number.
First of all, in the McAleese report, now that, as I say, is a disputed number.
It says that just over 10,000 women were sent to the Magdalene laundries.
It's likely to be far, far greater number.
But this 56,000, I didn't know where this came from.
And then the babies.
