But that idea of fallen is multi-layered in the book for exactly the reason you point out.
I focused on the six women because I wanted to show the diversity of roots into the Magdalene laundries, the experiences in there and then what life was like after leaving.
And that's an important thing in the book.
It's not just inside the laundry.
It's about the rise of the laundries.
It's about how people found their way in and also about life afterwards.
And, you know, as you say, there's these thousands of pages of survivor testimony.
My background experience is in doing oral history interviews.
So normally I'm just sort of out meeting people, trying to gather up stories that haven't been told.
But it just struck me here we have thousands of pages of interviews.
Someone just needs to sit down and read them.
And we're always saying, listen to the women.
And sometimes listening means listening to what already has been said.
So I spent months and months just reading and rereading those testimonies from, I think maybe over 30, it was about over 30 women.
And certain patterns began to develop.
And as you say, each of these women, what they share is that their journey into the Magdalene laundries were always cloaked in subterfuge and silence.
You're going somewhere better, a better job, better education, but trust us.
And the thing that's so interesting and so sad and tragic is also how none of them ever ask any questions.
And what comes up time and again is that they say things like,
Well, the way I was raised, deference to authority meant you did not ask questions, particularly of people who were religious or had an air of authority.
