What I do still think is true around that idea of buying the worst house in the best street is that neighbourhood really, really matters.
It matters on lots of levels.
It matters on the level of convenience but also things like your health, your wellbeing, your community.
And I would say it's less about buying the worst house on the best street but still being intentional about the neighbourhood.
That might mean living in an apartment.
And it requires being really reflective and actually understanding your lifestyle, like looking at what your typical day looks like.
What does your time look like?
What do your relationships look like?
Do you have kids and you're wanting grandparents involved?
Are you prepared to move 45 minutes away or is it actually better to be 20 minutes away and live in a smaller house?
None of these trade-offs are easy.
They're really difficult, but neighbourhood matters on a level that I think people don't often understand because it's not only about, oh, this neighbourhood is better than another.
It can actually affect your health.
Like if you've got access to transport, to shops, to amenities close by, you're statistically likely to be happier and healthier than if you don't have those things to the point that it can even affect your life expectancy on some levels.
So...
Thinking about these trade-offs, it's not only about comparing one house to another or an apartment to a freestanding house.
It's about considering all of the aspects of your life and the neighbourhood is one of them.
Absolutely.
And I think the thing to caveat here is that it's a very individual choice.
