Toward the end of our interview, I finally asked Diane a question I'd been wondering since I walked in.
It was a picture of the towers with a heart in the background.

And I think the reason why can be found in a personal story, the cultural historian Thomas Liqueur told me.
About his father, his grandfather, and maybe himself too.
Lequeur's father, a Jew, had to flee Germany in the nineteen forties.
He and his family settled in Virginia.
He was a doctor, a pathologist.
His father thought of the dead how any pathologist would, in a detached medical way.
When he died, he was cremated and his ashes were spread in a flower bed next to a lake in Virginia.
Ten years later, Liqueur was invited to give a talk in Germany.
