100 grand you know that you can physically see in your shares account it might be across you know your savings account your emergency fund your kiwi saver and your shares it's like you've got a snowball you know and i think again like just brainstorm it and just give yourself time to do it and go further down that path and you'll start to see things that that maybe you can't see right now i think that uh education piece for uh
Yeah I think I've told the story on here before but you know without naming them my
guy comes back to New Zealand from Australia and he sends it building a business and I said what like why why are you going so big you're playing so much bigger than what Kiwi people normally do and he's like well my retirement's sorted because I've got so much in my superannuation so I don't need to worry about that so why would I play small I'm like oh okay but I think a lot of us are you know in New Zealand where like the the the formula is um
safe job, safe income, and safe house, clear the house, then you've got safe pension income.
Great, like we've kind of almost brainwashed people into this sort of risk-off approach for their entire life to a degree, when maybe we need a bit more of that encouragement to be taking a bit more risk.
So yeah, I know it can be a bit of a touchy subject for some people, but it's great to see younger people, some of them coming through, looking at different ways to do these things.
Well, I think these are outlier stories, but I've had some great examples recently where a couple of people
that I know have have gotten themselves very wealthy through staying the path with their career because they've been given a allocation of shares as part of their role.
And they've been very invested in the vision of that business into their role.
And yeah I think there's going to be some cool stories come out of that out of some of the New Zealand based companies where they've done that.
I also sort of saw that with the accounting software that I started to use as a young fella getting into the accounting industry going wow these shares are pretty cheap and I hear some of the staff are like getting an allocation of these so that was fascinating to me.
I do think in that SME space it's still scary, like we love control and so letting go of some ownership and
Why would I do that?
And trying to figure out what motivates people.
Is it equity or is it a bonus or is it more money?
How long will they stay for?
How do we unwind it if it's not working?
I think we've got a big education piece to do to teach people that it's even an option.
I had a mate recently who's got an option to buy into a business and he's like, mate, I'm just going to do it, but I don't even really know what's happening.
Yeah.
