Therefore, A, I could never realistically protect you or our offspring if push came to shove.
B, I can neither provide for you nor buy you thoughtful gifts nor take you on holiday nor project forwards into a stable future together.
C, I will often be quite fretful and insecure.
D, so that's annoying, isn't it?
For inadequacies A through D, their needs must be some form of reimbursement.
Supposedly, I would bring in their place A, intelligence, B, kindness, C, good humour, and D, compassion.
But dear Lord, what lofty qualities.
Not to mention transitory and ambiguous.
What even are they, really?
And who among us can manifest them constantly?
This is really asking one's personality to do an awful lot of the heavy lifting.
And a personality is somewhat like the weather.
What it came down to is that I was offering, in place of the traditional qualities of masculinity, precisely nothing.
A vortex that could consume the two of us.
Eventually, sometimes after months or years of unhappiness, my girlfriend would begin to feel that I was not a real man.
But this would be as painful for her to admit herself as for me to infer it from her gradual withdrawal of affection.
The truth is...
Nobody wants a sensitive man at all.
A sensitive man may be very kind and obliging, largely because he has a delicate psyche to protect and has learned that the best way to do this is to avoid conflict altogether.
