And I think like towards the very end of the novel, he has like a sort of almost like a debriefing conversation with the narrator, because the narrator seeks him out and goes and finds his house and is like, what was all that about?
He sort of insists he wasn't going to do that.
And he's like, we're just like, we're supposedly like,
the brightest minds in our disciplines, and we're required to spend like two thirds of our working lives boring, hungover teenagers to tears.
It's a really weird job.
Our audience is really odd.
We're supposed to be kind of delivering these kinds of pearls of wisdom to people who are too hungover to even really listen to us.
He's disappointed with what he's not been able to achieve.
