But in the first year... He had some problems that I noticed when he started walking.

So, for instance, like most kids... You know how they take their little fat feet and they just sort of plop them down?

Yeah.

When David lifted his foot to take a step... He would halt.

Hesitate.

Then put it down.

Then one day when June noticed he was playing, he couldn't get up off the floor.

So at the age of five, they took David to a doctor who ran some tests and told them that David had muscular dystrophy.

And the doctor was describing what was going to be happening next.

and how he was not going to be able to walk and finally not be able to breathe, and the heart wouldn't work because they're all muscle.

And they probably wouldn't live past 12 years of age.

And I'm thinking to myself, why are you saying this in front of my child?

Did David seem terrified in that moment?

He was just sitting there.

Very stoically.

And so they go home and try as best as they can to just have a normal life.

He loved cartoons on Saturday morning.

He loved to play with matches.

And little plastic army guys.

And in early ages, he's in a wheelchair.
