Today, Sanderson Oni joins me to explore how those with mental illness are supported and treated in Indonesia.
Sandy came to Australia in 2012 to study at university.
His interest in the state of Indonesian mental health began when he made occasional visits back to his home country.
Sandioni remembers back to the first symptoms of depression he had.
They began while he was still living in Indonesia.
And you said that it became so extreme that you thought about suicide.
And you've found out since that your father had experienced mental illness as well.
And you've actually recently spoken to him about that, haven't you?
Sandy Oni, speaking with his father, Susanto Oni, who is founder and CEO of the Indonesian Institute of Management.
He experienced mental health problems for 26 years, but now says he's recovered.
On his recent visit to Indonesia, Sandioni also spoke with Rati Ibrahim, a prominent clinical psychologist who works in government initiatives for mental health there, including her own counselling centre called Personal Growth.
Sandy asked her how widespread mental health problems are in Indonesia.
