So what happens in our brains when we make assumptions about people who don't seem to be like us, when they may look, speak or behave differently?

To explore some of these questions, I'm speaking with Lasana Harris, who's Associate Professor in Experimental Psychology at University College London.

His research is in social neuroscience, specifically looking at how we perceive other people, as well as animals and other things outside ourselves.

He explained to me how he became interested in this area.

Social cognition is the term used to describe the way we perceive others.

And I wondered whether this is something we're born with or whether it develops through childhood.

So that idea of anthropomorphizing, it exists by the time we become adults as well, doesn't it?

How important is that in our adult life?

Interesting.

And that capacity of ours to remove ourselves to some extent emotionally, I suppose, is also evident when we, sadly, we have this ability to dehumanize others.

I'm speaking with Lissana Harris, who's Associate Professor of Experimental Psychology at University College London.

He uses tools from neuroscience to study the brain mechanisms involved in dehumanisation and other ways we perceive each other's minds.

So is prejudice and racism a form of this dehumanization?
