You know, it's funny.
You mentioned, you know, Trayvon Martin.
And the first person that texted me was actually my son because he was about Trayvon's age when he was murdered.
And so we were in Chicago when that happened.
And
We were in Lincoln Park, a neighborhood that you know, Don, you've lived in Chicago.
And so you know it's predominantly white and affluent.
And we used to freak out when my son, who was on the track team, would run in the neighborhood with his hoodie on before the shooting.
So after the shooting, we were absolutely just a mess.
And we moved, to be honest with you.
We moved out of the neighborhood, Lincoln Park, because even though it's quote unquote one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago, we knew it wasn't safe for me, and it definitely wasn't safe for my son.
And so we moved out of that affluent area and moved somewhere where there was more diversity and less opportunities for us to be fearful of.
So he called me right away and just he was upset.
not just because of the loss, but he also knows, Don, what it's like to be the only Black person in a group full of white people.
As I said, we were in Lincoln Park, a predominantly white neighborhood.
So it's a constant presence for him or a reminder of him of what it's like to navigate these spaces as he's moving up through his life.
And it's just...
It was hard for me to try to help him process this because I don't want him to be fearful of the world.
I want him to still go out there and be bold and travel by himself and go to places where Black folks don't normally go.
I want him to do all of that.
