And if you're going to pick a second one, it's probably income.

And base as gender inequality means?

Well, I'm glad you asked because it means different things depending on which social scientist you're talking to.

So we know and anyone who listens to this podcast has heard a million times that men have a stronger mate preference for looks on average, at least certainly in their state of mate preferences and in some revealed measures as well.

And then women have a stronger state of preference for resources.

And then obviously there's the sex difference in age preferences where men have a preference for youth and then women have a preference for slightly older than them throughout their lives.

So you've got all those differences.

And there's been this very longstanding debate over the extent to which this is explicable with reference to social and economic factors and the extent to which it's explicable by evolutionary factors.

So what we did, if you go through this debate, there's been tons of cross-cultural studies.

There's been seven really, really big ones.

And those have generally found that... I mean, in...

Five out of the seven have found something there with regards to mate preferences for resources and gender inequality.

All of the ones that checked age found that when gender inequality is lower, mate preferences and age gaps get smaller.

And then the beauty basically doesn't move.

In fact, there's even some evidence that it goes in the opposite direction in one of those analyses.

So you've got this kind of mixed result there.

And then you can look at the individual level studies as well, where you look at when people have more money, what happens to their mate preferences.

And I could talk about that more.

It's actually a bit controversial.

So there's different ways of measuring this.
