You've been fed the lie that intent is achievement.

It is not.

It's like a kind of rousing political speech.

I wouldn't really mind that if there'd been a bit more build up.

But as it is, this is our first introduction to crits at uni and also our first introduction to Carpenter.

So it's almost like to me, the novelist was like, I have this idea.

I really want to get it down.

I can't be bothered doing a bit of lead up to it.

And this is just going to be the first introduction at university to my thoughts.

I found it a bit cloying.

Yeah.

I think that when I started reading it, I was so excited.

I thought the beginning passages and sections were great.

They reminded me a little bit of some of the scenes in Las Vegas in The Goldfinch with Donna Tartt, two boys running around and that kind of epic energy.

But as it went on...

I felt that the verve of the beginning lost itself a little.

When I finished the novel, I felt a bit upset because I'd wanted so much more for it.

But I was still kind of like, no, that's good.

And then over a few days after I read it, I kept thinking about it and each time I thought about it, I thought it was worse.
