Appearances
The first one is Returns and Exchanges by an American author, Kayla Rae Whittaker.
It's such a good title.
Her debut was called The Animators and it came out in 2018, so it's taken her a fair while to come out with a second book and I've been looking forward to it for years.
This one, it is set in Kentucky in the 1980s
And it's a family saga and the family owns and runs a chain of like discount retail stores.
And it really just kind of follows the relations between the family over 10 years looking at, you know, sexuality, gender, shame, but also just particular intensity of being really tight with your family and also working with them.
And it looks at the rise of Walmart-esque stores that kind of buy out, that get rid of all their family-owned stores.
But it's just beautifully written.
I really loved it.
Yeah, yeah.
She always writes about kind of the parts of America you don't get to see that much.
And then the second book is so much fun.
It's called Fruit Fly by Josh Silver.
It's kind of like... I'm going to say this and it's going to sound so wrong, but it's like a queer yellow face.
And I'll explain in the sense that the book Yellow Face is about a white woman kind of appropriating Chinese culture and pretending to be Asian to sell her book.
because she thinks that, you know, minorities are in.
And in this book... It's such a great premise.
It's such a good premise.
And in this book, Josh clearly has read Yellowface, but he's having fun with it.
It's a writer, Mallory, who had a hit, like, ten years ago.
