I wrote a letter to the Times a few weeks ago based on some comments that I remember when I was working in an insurance company.
And one of the actors there, who was quite competent but also a little bit pedantic, mentioned that he'd done a few calculations and had decided that he was going to buy a lottery ticket because he liked the idea of winning 15 million quid or whatever.
But he was never going to buy it before 7 o'clock on a Saturday because he'd worked out that
After that time, his chances of dying before the draw was made were slightly lower than his chances of winning the jackpot and being able to claim it.
Well, it would be good to get it checked out.
Obviously people's life expectations vary considerably depending on what they do and what their age is.
I did some rough calculations at the time and tested out his assumptions and they seemed to stack up
But if you can get a current top actuary to redo the calculations, I'd be very interested to hear what he's got to say.
