because i've actually been doing this for 20 years so this is like my fourth tattoo book so um and i've got like over 100 magazine articles on tattoos so yeah it's really a lot and um like i've interviewed like like many many many many of the artists like and several like over like over the entire 20 years just like continuously so i've seen the whole kind of scene change
And just because I felt like, you know, everything is changing so rapidly and I wasn't actually going to put out another book and then, like, but then I could see how much it was changing and also just because of social media, like not just with tattoos but, you know, just like culture in general, like everything was changing so much.
And so I thought like, yeah, I felt like inspired just to leave behind something
I was getting tattooed.
And I just got a curiosity about tattoos.
The first time I actually met a tattoo artist was when I was a teenager.
And there was Horitoku, who's a major figure in traditional Japanese tattooing.
And there was this random, I just saw his work in a magazine.
It's so random.
And I just called him, which is like in hindsight absolutely ridiculous.
Like that's not something you do.
Like normally you need like an introduction to these people.
And the only reason, like it was so ridiculous that I would do this, that even he remembers me, like even though it's like two decades later.
And he was like, I remember the first time you came.
And he even remembers what I was wearing.
Like it was so strange that someone like me would just turn up.
And when I called him, like I was like,
i was like oh i saw your work in a magazine like and honestly i'd never seen anything like it like um the amount of like this kind of like incredible like energy like the density of energy and like the sophistication and the elegance of the work and he's really famous for like dragons and um like the work i saw was like this white dragon and it was like lifting off the body like it had life and it was like absolutely exquisite and um and
And I didn't know anything about Japanese tattoos.
So I just thought it was like a shop.
