It was, it's not the, it's not like the high culture of the leagues, like the commoners.

And so they were kind of like the custodians of the culture.

And so, um,

This notion of icky is that because the commoners were being quite flash as well and flaunting their hedonism,

All these sumptuary laws, like luxury laws, were placed on them.

And it was kind of like, hey, turn it down a bit.

And so they weren't allowed to wear silk and stuff like that, so they can only wear cotton.

And so the sensibility of Ikki, which is basically like they'd show off, but in places you couldn't see.

So it'd be like the underside of a kimono would be super embellished.

And so when they're walking, you could see a little glimpse of it, but it wouldn't be super on display.

And this became like an aesthetic sensibility, and it's still part of Stamachi culture.

This kind of Ikki culture is like hyper-embellishing yourself, but you'd only see a little bit of a glimpse of it, and that seemed to be more beautiful than just being super flash and stuff.

And so even with artisans like Horikazu or Doku, you could be standing outside their apartment, like the studio, and there's no way you'd know there's an artisan in there.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's very, very kind of like, it's very, that kind of hidden appeal is like, it's what's considered icky.

But now it's changed because everyone's on Instagram and on YouTube and stuff like that, so it's a totally different era.

Actually, I think what's happening and why I wanted to do this book as well is I actually think the work is suffering.
