Even though Donald Trump is not on the ballot, his approval rating is under 40 percent, and that hurts Republicans.
Voters have soured on his agenda.
They're unhappy with the economy.
They're unhappy about the Iran war and tariffs.
They blame both of those things for high prices.
Democrats also have an advantage in voter enthusiasm and turnout.
It appears to be a 180-degree reversal in Trump's view of the war in Ukraine.
After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations, Trump posted on social media that he now thinks Ukraine, backed by the EU and NATO, could win back all its territory.
Previously, Trump had said that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine would involve Russia keeping parts of Ukraine that it took by force.
Now he says Russia looks like a paper tiger that is in big economic trouble.

But when the president was asked if the US would honor its NATO commitments and back up NATO allies if they shot down Russian planes, he was more equivocal, saying, quote, Depends on the circumstance, but you know we're very strong towards NATO.
The US president put off a question about his so far fruitless discussions about the war in Ukraine with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, asked whether he still trusts Putin.
Trump said I'll let you know about a month from now.
