Good morning everybody.
Uh I'm Mark Duchen, I'm the councilman for Council District Ten in Austin.
And I've stood in this room and helped with a few proclamations over the last year.
But I think today's is one of the more important.
As public servants it's our duty to make sure that Austinite's prepared for
extreme weather events and public safety crises and other emergencies.
And so I'm proud to join the community.
In proclaiming September as National Preparedness Month, my team and I respond to large scale emergencies.
Including the one that happened shortly after I took office last year, when tornado force winds tore through northwest Austin.
and left hundreds of folks in the neighborhood without power for days.
And these were constituents.
And the challenges they faced were significant, particularly those that were older adults, and particularly the older adults that had medical challenges.
Many were homebound or socially isolated, or had caregivers that were unable to reach them during this time.
And that's why I'm grateful for the work of the Commission of Aging and one of its longtime members joining us today, Fred Lugo.
His work and the Commission's work ensures that older residents put together emergency kits, that they set up contingency plans for emergencies with their neighbors and with their relatives.
They take other recommended precautions that help us weather and overcome emergencies.
And that plan follows neatly with the three federal
