Now, the important thing here is that Henry VIII really wanted to use this marriage to unite Scotland and England.

The Scots were not into this plan.
The arrangement was broken and Henry, well, he sent his army to attack Scotland.
OK, so smuggled out of Scotland as a kid while it's being attacked by the English, turfed out of France and now a teenager back in Scotland.
And it turns out there's been some changes since she left.
But alas, Mary was still Catholic.
And look, for most Catholics in this now Protestant country...
Things were not great.
Every day you would be on guard because if you were caught doing anything that showed you were a Catholic, then you would be punished.
They had a real gift for cruel punishment, didn't they?
So she's in a precarious position, but, you know, she's still queen.
And with that comes power, but also politics, which is where her nemesis comes into the story.
The leader of the Protestants in Scotland at the time was a man by the name of John Knox.
So a Catholic half-French monarch's not going to be great for him, is it?
And John Knox was not coping.
He tries to outlaw as much Catholicism as he can.
