Behind every successful recruit class stands a training officer whose responsibility is shaping the next generation of firefighters.

These officers spend long days making sure every detail of training runs smoothly, guiding recruits not only as a supervisor but as a mentor and a role model.

For Class 134, that leader is Captain Alex Gordon,

A two-time graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Captain Gordon served as a firefighter in Shelby, North Carolina, before joining the Charlotte Fire Department on September 16, 2013, as a member of Recruit Class 91.

But I would not be here today, we would not be here today with groups of people that I'm going to mention because that list is so long.

Chief Johnson and the command staff,

Thank you for your attendance again and your support.

I went back and counted.

Since my appointment here in February of 24, we have graduated 180 recruits, counting those seated out here.

So we have stuff running around the clock, and y'all's all in support helps us with that.

So, again, for that reason, I'm not going to try to mention everyone, but I'm going to try to get to the other groups.

But that means they're giving up time away from what would otherwise be time off from the fire department to be here and teach recruits.

So they're taking time and dedication to be with the recruits on those days.

Thank you for setting the standard, and we now expect it to uphold to serve the citizens of Charlotte.

You didn't just teach us skills, you built discipline, accountability, and a standard we will carry for the rest of our careers.
