Duncroft started as something of a mix between a halfway house and a state prison for teenage girls.
Owing to the British style of parenting that often left child rearing to institutions like boarding schools, it was thought that it would be better if vulnerable, damaged girls were looked after by the state.
And Duncroft was considered to be the cutting edge of these types of so-called approved schools.
