And so he stopped engaging in a robust communications effort.

He just stopped.

He didn't talk to the press.

I mean, he would do press conferences, but he just didn't do all the sort of reputational management stuff that he had previously done.

And so nobody was telling his side of the story.

And perhaps he might have done better in 1932 had he bothered to care for his reputation.

Especially as a mining engineer.

I think you're right.

I mean, I think the Wall Street Journal's version of history has changed a little bit over time.

It used to blame it entirely on Smoot-Hawley.

Smoot-Hawley, of course, was the tariff act that everybody implored Hoover not to sign, that he really didn't want to sign, but he signed because he was trying to work with the Congress.

But everybody says that was definitive.

Global trade was what, like less than 3% of GDP at the time?

Hoover had a quote later on.

He said, once upon a time, my political opponents honored me as possessing the fabulous intellect and economic power by which I created a worldwide oppression all by myself.

Well, so one of the things that another piece of the history is as soon as FDR is inaugurated, Hoover is alarmed by the New Deal.

And he writes a book called The Challenge to Liberty.

The Challenge to Liberty might be among Hoover's least read books.

But again, like in the 1946 Administrative Procedures Act, eyes glaze over at role.
