And there is somebody who did create one.
Yeah, a notes app.
So if we think about it overall, we can see that food cost price increases aren't going up as quickly as they did before, but people are still really struggling with sticker shock at the grocery store.
In the most recent May consumer price index, the food index stayed relatively unchanged.
But over the past year, between May 2023 and May 2024, the food index increased by 2.1%.
But at the same time, Americans are spending near record levels of their disposable personal income on food, according to the most recent United States Department of Agriculture data.
U.S.
food prices jumped 25 percent between 2019 and 2023.
So people are continuing to find creative ways and experimenting with traditional money saving techniques such as bulk buying to deal with these costs.
A lot of people I spoke with just went on rough estimations and if they were content with how much they were spending at the cashier.
For example, the individual I spoke with who's a college student says he's pretty happy with spending $60 a week on groceries with this system.
And he kind of just roughly estimated.
Another individual I spoke to did some more advanced calculations and he created an Excel spreadsheet, went per unit cost, took into account the expiration date and said, if X percent of this item we're going to have to throw out, therefore the cost becomes this.
Are we still saving money?
And he realized the answer was no.
It really depends on the person and what some of their constraints are.
For the group of college roommates I spoke to, they said they really are saving money through this system.
One of the roommates I spoke to said that he spent $6 a week on groceries and he estimates the system is saving him $20 per week.
But again, it really depends on one's preferences and making sure the items that you're splitting with, whether it be chicken or massive boxes of mac and cheese, are things that the people that you're splitting with are also going to enjoy.
Meanwhile, for another individual I spoke to and he created a spreadsheet to map out the cost and took into account expiration date and some of these other factors found that he really wasn't saving money at all.
