Absolutely, yeah.

So I taught him the sound eh.

And hmm, so three letters.

And so he learnt that.

And then by the end of the week, of course, I showed him the slide, how to do that.

And he slid those sounds together to read at and am.

And I'll never forget his face.

It was just like...

oh my goodness, I just read two more words.

I said, you've just doubled the amount of words you can read.

And I said, and I promise you by the end of next week, we're going to add another five words on.

So he just kept coming.

He just kept coming.

And honestly, if I had a day off, if I had a sick day the next day, he would find me in the playground and say, where were you yesterday?

I missed out learning some more words.

And

Six months later, he was reading, you know, not really proficiently, but he was reading.

He was able to read like paragraphs.

And, you know, somebody just had to show him and unlock that code for him and teach him what to do with those sounds and, you know, give him really the skills.

Explicit teaching is what he needed.
