A six-year-long fight is coming to an end as the Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit, finalizes a sixty million dollar purchase of about eight thousand acres near the Okie Fanoki swamp.
Alabama based Twin Pines Minerals, owned the ridge next to the swamp and applied for permits with the State of Georgia in twenty nineteen to mine titanium dioxide, a whitening pigment used in paints and foods.
Scientists argue digging into the ridge along the swamp would lower the already very shallow water levels and dry up fire prone areas.
The sale is set to be completed july thirty first.
