I can't help thinking Edgar Allan Poe must have been somewhere in the background.
So it's the gothic uh cr transformed into this ongoing narrative in which everything is malign, cursed, uh wrong, awry, uh
in some way
unsettling.
Um and it then culminates in the last three stanzas, uh three of the greatest stanzas ever written, in which all this awryeness is suddenly brought to a glorious climax and we never find out what that climax is actually going to be.
Yes, and it's m fusing that with the Chanson de Roland from uh the uh French Middle Ages, that Roland was a very purposeful knight and killed lots of people and in the end is killed himself Jon Saval, I think.
So it's happening in this kind of literary interspace between all these different possible sources.
And that's what makes it such a, I think, Victorian poem.
And although it's
Uh it's it's happening in the middle of nowhere, so to speak.
It's also got lots of different voices coursing through it.
It's kind of quite populous.
And you can't trust the voices.
My first thought was he lied in every word, that hoary cripple with malicious eye scarce to watch the working of his lie on mine, and mouth scarce able to afford suppression of the glee.
that pursed and scored its edge at one more victim gained thereby.
So he's been he's on his horse going somewhere.
We don't know where he's going, uh and he comes across this this person who obviously belongs in some kind of nightmarish or kind of gothic gatekeeper figure.
He's not there's no gate or but h this person tells him this script tells him, Go this way.
Go and turn right.
And he thinks it's deliberate that he's being tricked.
