The logic of mental talk
where I can have motivations and reasons that get me to do something is different than the logic of physical talk, which is all about strict causal law connections between things.
So that is a hard to deny.
But the question is, does that then drive you to something like Chalmers view of property dualism that like, no, the mental and physical are just different ways of talking about things.
Or are we driven to, you know, Dennett where, okay, the mental, yeah, it's a different way of talking.
Because it is a cultural construction that is, it's not like a, just, it's just a different point of view on the physical.
Like he's not Spinoza.
Dennett is not Spinoza.
That if you can have this mental talk and we can do the kind of stuff we do, like, why did you do that?
Well, because I had this belief in this desire and stuff.
And that's, that language game is fine, but don't think you're doing science when you're doing that.
You are, again, we really need to read Sellers, one of Dennett's primary, about the scientific image.
that we have the folk psychology, we have the scientific image, and he's interested in doing science.
And he doesn't think that that will make it so you can't also do ethics or you can't value the subjectivity of animals or any of this stuff.
He just thinks that it's a different, it's almost irrelevant.
So he brings these things up in his book only to say, to sort of psychoanalyze his potential adversaries
Oh, you don't want to explain consciousness because you think consciousness is magic.
And if we dispel the magic, then we'll all just treat each other like sacks of meat.
Well, that's a pretty irrational overreaction.
Maybe, you know, and they're not the most sympathetic parts of the book because he doesn't care about his interlocutors, except insofar as, you know, would you just stop talking about things that are irrelevant of what I'm trying to do?
